While the industry he once called home has held him accountable for the frightful things he did to women, the charges being filed against Weinstein by the New York City District Attorney are necessary.

The New York Daily News reports the disgraced Hollywood mogul, accused of sexually harassing more than 80 women, is expected to turn himself into authorities in New York on Friday local time (Saturday AEST).

His lawyer, Benjamin Brafman, said Friday that he would fight to get the charges dismissed.

Since then, almost 100 women have come forward alleging 40 years of impropriety that sparked a sexual harassment watershed, ending the careers of powerful men and spawning the global #MeToo and Time's Up movements.

Since the claims surfaced last fall, Harvey Weinstein himself has been investigated by police in several different cities in addition to NY, has been sued for sexual harassment and defamation, and has been expelled from the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences.

The precise charges Weinstein is expected to face weren't immediately clear.

More than 75 women have accused Weinstein of wrongdoing, and authorities in California and London are also investigating assault allegations.

New York City police detectives said in early November that they were investigating allegations by another accuser, "Boardwalk Empire" actress Paz de la Huerta, who told police in October that Weinstein raped her twice in 2010.

Harvey Weinstein has turned himself - finally.

On Friday, Weinstein handed off the books at the police station, where he was booked quickly.

Weinstein has always denied non-consensual sex and these are the first charges that have been levelled against him. She says Weinstein made unwanted advances toward her on two occasions in 1991, in NY and Los Angeles. "I hope this gives hope to victims and survivors everywhere, that we are one step closer to justice".

"I came of age in the '60s and '70s, when all the rules about behavior and workplaces were different", the 66-year-old said in a freakish statement in October that apologized for yet appeared to justify his behavior. He agreed to post $1 million cash bail, wear an electronic monitor and not travel beyond NY and CT. He sought treatment for sex addiction at a facility in Scottsdale, Arizona, the New York Times reported.

Dozens of women have accused Weinstein of sexual misconduct, ranging from inappropriate comments to alleged rape.

"I can say this, the man who pinned me down had handcuffs on him today", she told NBC's Megyn Kelly in an interview shortly after the arrest.

Long revered in the world of cinema, Weinstein, whose abuses have exploded the movement #MeToo, should also be recorded, his picture and fingerprints taken, before being transferred to the court, which is located not far from the office, to be presented to a judge.

In February 2018, The Weinstein Company, which was co-founded by Weinstein filed for bankruptcy following a last-ditch deal failed. Al Franken, chef Mario Batali, casino magnate Steve Wynn and, most recently, New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman.

The public allegations against Weinstein helped prompt a broad public furor about sexual misconduct.
