Solo Star Wars film underwhelms at box office

Alden Ehrenreich in a still from Solo: A Star Wars Story. The standalone adventure has been under a microscope throughout the past few months due to its troubled development process. Shortly after the directing duo departed the Galaxy Far, Far Away, Ron Howard (A Beautiful Mind, Rush) stepped in to complete the film. With so many Star Wars projects in the pipeline, the revived film franchise might already be heading toward if not a saturation point, at least the point where the films are no longer an event-type release.

CNET's Mike Sorrentino calls the film "simple and fun" but said it "lacks the epic feeling we normally get from comparable Star Wars movies".

But tipping the odds in "Solo's" favor is the fact that it's part of a sci-fi franchise that has brought in roughly $9 billion at the worldwide box office, and arguably has the most loyal fan base in pop culture.

Its four-day holiday weekend estimate looks to hit US$20 million. Unfortunately, the movie's sales aren't even close to meeting that threshold.

"It's the compressed timeframe between the two "Star Wars" films and the highly competitive nature of this marketplace". Opening over the Memorial Day holiday weekend, the studio expected the film to ring up between $130-150 million domestically. All in all, it must be considered a disappointing opening given the lofty expectations for the film.

"When a fan asked whether they should rush out and see it to help the opening - which is coming in at around 70% of initial projections - Howard encouraged the fan to check the film's hashtag for balanced feedback" and then see it in theaters. Its domestic total now reads $34.2 million after earning $12.5 million for the four-day weekend. Personally, I enjoyed it more than any of the other recently released Star Wars films, but maybe the overall fandom isn't into it. Solo now has an A- on Cinema Score and a 71 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. As it turns out, Disney is also eager to answer that mystery. In some instances we'd change stuff a lot, and other instances we'd use elements of what was in place, and something we'd use a scene entirely - and they're brilliant guys. "We have a year and a half before Episode IX comes out", Disney distribution chief Dave Hollis says. We've had so much success. According to the BBC, experts predicted the movie would take $130m (£97.6m) and $150m (£112.7m) in its first weekend.

Despite finishing atop the Memorial Day weekend box office, the latest entry to the "Star Wars" canon from Disney and Lucasfilm, Solo: A Star Wars Story, failed to break the $100 million plateau, managing just $83.3 million.
