A more widespread area of rain and embedded storms will arrive early Tuesday and last all day before Alberto moves north of Alabama by Wednesday. Only a half-inch or less of rain is expected for Monday and the chance of rain will decrease from 70 percent to 40 percent as the day turns into evening. River flooding will be possible this week as a result.

The Emerald Coast remains under a storm surge watch and a tropical storm warning. High tide around midday today will run 1-2 feet above normal.

A flood watch has been extended for all of South Florida until Monday, forecasters say, confirming that Memorial Day will indeed be a wet one. A high surf warning was in effect through 7 p.m. Tuesday local time.

There is a marginal threat of tornadoes from the system through Sunday.

Franklin County, in the Florida Panhandle, has issued a mandatory evacuation for its barrier islands in the Gulf of Mexico affecting some 4,200 housing units, while Taylor County, to the east, has a voluntary evacuation order in place for its coastal areas.

Subtropical Storm Alberto strengthened slightly overnight as it continued to move over the eastern Gulf of Mexico, according to the National Hurricane Center, but Louisiana continues to appear to be in the clear when it comes to the heavier rainfall associated with the system. He said Alberto was likely to slow down as it meets land in Florida and Alabama, but heavy tropical showers are expected all across Florida.
