Almost three years' worth of rain were dumped on the city of Salalah by Cyclone Mekunu in 24 hours, with the cyclone also hitting Yemen.

Rescue team found four sailors in their search operations.

State-run Oman Television showed footage of large areas covered with floods in Dhofar and the nearby Al-Wusta provinces.

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said no Filipino has been reported dead or missing in Oman, following a powerful storm that triggered massive floods there.

Authorities in Oman have said they expected the cyclone to pass over the city of Salalah on Friday night.

It was the strongest cyclone ever recorded to hit the area.

The storm earlier hit Yemen's island of Socotra, causing deaths and widespread damages.

Police said a 12-year old girl died when a gust of wind sent her smashing into a wall. The strength of the storm over Oman has now been downgraded from category three to category one.

The Saudi meteorological authority said on Sunday that winds blew at 60 kilometres per hour, kicking up blinding dust storms.

The cyclone killed around seven people on the Yemeni island of Socotra on Friday. Three Asians who were wounded by the cyclone were rescued.

The central bank, meanwhile, issued a circular announcing a three-day holiday starting on Sunday for money exchange houses, banks, finance and leasing companies in Dhofar. Authorities said however that schools would remain closed until Monday. The island of Socotra has been declared a disaster zone by the government.

Yemeni officials also reported damage in the country's far east, along the border with Oman.

They made a decision to set up 11 relief centers in Socotra to provide shelter for evacuees.

The directorate general of meteorology in Oman said the cyclone had gone inland and was heading northwest into Saudi Arabia, but that heavy rains would likely continue today.
