Official 'heartbroken' by flood devastation in Md.'s Ellicott City

Lisa Bryan | 28 May, 2018, 15:25

Ellicott City was still recovering from a flash flood two years ago that killed two and forced the historic city to rebuild much of its Main Street. She had been around the last time the area flooded, but said this time it appeared worse.

Other images included those of rescue workers checking damaged buildings, cars tipped over like toy vehicles, and the governor walking around the town and, later, asking the merely curious to stay away.

Multiple area fire and rescue crews, including Montgomery and Prince George's Counties, worked to help people stranded in their homes in the area.

Rescue swimmers from all three shifts are being called in, the department tweeted, with swift water units responding from as far away at Northern Virginia.

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan earlier declared a state of emergency in the flood-stricken area. "We're doing the best we can to help anybody that needs help", County Executive Allan Kittleman said.

The flooding in 2016 caused catastrophic damage, but 96 percent of the businesses downtown rebuilt and reopened. Those seeking shelter can go to the Roger Carter Community Center at 3000 Milltowne Drive. From pictures, she said it looks like there is nothing left on the front of her building.

Raging water toppled buildings, swept away cars and rose as high as nearly two metres in Ellicott City, about 22km west of Baltimore, on Sunday (local time).

"If you are trapped, we are coming", the agency tweeted.

And Ellicott City was on its way back - just a few weeks ago.

At 4:40 p.m. EST, the National Weather Service sent out a warning to Ellicott City in Howard County, Maryland. The money was slated to improve a culvert on West End to protect homeowners in the area.

"We had a very, very heavy cell move over us, and it just unloaded and did not let up", he said. People are being urged to not call 911 as long as they are in a safe space. Water, cleaning supplies and flashlights are among the items needed most.

Authorities say Ellicott City, on the west bank of Maryland's Patapsco River, is prone to periodic flooding. "Anxiously waiting for the rain to stop and floods to slow", Kat Foster, who escaped the rising waters, wrote on Twitter, posting a video of the deluge.
