Will Power took the lead in the Indianapolis 500 with four laps to go, knew he had it won when he took the white flag all alone and spent the final lap yelling to himself as he pulled away from the field.

"Doing anything more than that from the last row was going to be a challenge", he said. But he headed to the pits with five laps to go, giving the lead to Power. "I was wondering if I would ever win it and thoughts when through my mind during the month, my career", he said.

"Man, I just can't believe it", the 37-year-old Australian exclaimed after his winning finish.

Helio Castroneves made a public plea to return to the Indianapolis 500 next year, and it appears team owner Roger Penske will oblige. Power also won the road-course event. "At last they had a formula, if you had a good vehicle, the leader could benefit and pull away".

"He and I love racing together".

"It's an entire career, but what really launched it was this, so it's both of them", she told ESPN.

Now, this time, we're going to have a good chat tonight and I'm sure share a beer.

With hot weather creating a slick, 2 ½-mile oval, new cars with less downforce proved to be handful.

Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing's Takuma Sato lasted just 46 laps in defense of his 2017 Indy 500 victory, plowing into the back of a laboring James Davison in Turn 3.

Patrick had been running near the middle of the pack in the Indianapolis 500 when she lost control, slid hard into the outside wall, then caromed across the track and hit the inside barrier before coming to a stop on the infield grass in Lap 68 out of 200.

Instead, as one of the most marketable athletes in North America Patrick has been able to turn her fame into businesses ranging from wine to a clothing line, opportunities that she said would keep her busy. She was surrounded by autograph-seekers all month, and she got one of the loudest ovations during driver introductions Sunday. Lots of fun to follow her whole career. Despite the hard hit, Patrick managed to climb out of the auto on her own. She has not competed at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway since 2011, as she moved over to NASCAR for the intervening years. The 30th-place finish was the worst of her career at the Indianapolis 500, a stark contrast to the six top-10s she produced in her previous seven starts from 2005-11. "When is the anthem?' But I had a lot of my people around me so I was in good spirits". "It just seemed to come around and seemed pretty late off the corner". That put her in good company, as she finished ahead of three-time victor Helio Castroneves and a number of other Indy 500 winners.

Bourdais crashed a year after missing the race because of a harrowing, high-speed accident during qualifying. Moments after climbing out of his wrecked vehicle, he begged Penske for another chance.
