Memorial Day 2018 parades, ceremonies and festivals

Orleans: The observance will begin at 10 a.m.at Yacht Club Landing on Town Cove with a brief service to honor the Coast Guard and Navy and proceed to the Memorial Stones at Academy Place to honor the Army, Marine Corps and Air Force.

Contact Ray Steele, chairman of the Veterans Memorial. for more details or if you like to honor a military veteran past, present or future with the purchase of a commemorative brick. Those who volunteer to place flags will receive breakfast at half price.

St. Paul: 9 a.m. Monday at Elmhurst Cemetery, 1510 N. Dale St.

The Illinois Veterans Home, Manteno, will have a ceremony 2 p.m. Monday at Veterans Hall. Anyone wishing to assist is welcome to participate.

Murrysville/Export/Delmont: White Valley AMVETS Post 85, the Export American Legion Post 858, Murrysville American Legion Post 711 and the Delmont VFW Post 481 will combine forces to hold Memorial Day services at five local cemeteries. Keynote espeaker will be writer Dave Gathman, a former reporter for The Courier-News, who will talk about the war and Elgin's involvement in it. The public is invited to attend. There are no seats; If you want to sit down, you must bring your own chairs. Free shuttle bus service is offered within the village.

A parade will start at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Nikolay Middle School, 211 South St., and will head down Main Street.

Buses will follow a holiday schedule with reduced service Monday.

¯ The Gerry Memorial Day Parade will be held Sunday, with lineup beginning at 1:30 p.m.at the Gerry Fire Hall.

The event is sponsored by the cemetery and Tulsa's American Legion Post No. 1.


A Memorial Day service will be held at 11 a.m.at the Angel of Peace Cemetery in Hopkins Park. Music will be provided by the Belle City Brassworks.

The groups will meet at 6 a.m. Monday at the American Legion Cabin to start posting flags downtown, and they will post flags at the cemetery at 7:30 a.m. Ends at Echo Park, Highway 36, for the veteran ceremonial tribute at approximately 10 a.m.

In Sandwich, services begin at 11 a.m.at Veterans Park Gazebo in downtown Sandwich, 11 a.m., services will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery, St. Paul's Cemetery, Pratt Cemetery and Pine Mound Cemetery. A conductress from the Disabled American Auxiliary Unit 9 will speak.

In the event of rainy weather, the ceremony will be moved indoors to the St. Mary Catholic Church's Parish Life Center Building at 110 St Mary Ave.in Fort Walton Beach.

Each of these programs should last 20 to 30 minutes. Immediately following the service will be a wreath laying ceremony by a retired military officer with a gun salute in front of the Mound Cemetery Chapel honoring all who served the country in the military.

Brook Park - Parade, Monday, 10 a.m. starting from Brookgate Shopping Center and ending at Kennedy Park where ceremonies will be held. Barbecue dinners may be purchased after the ceremony in the Citizens Bank parking lot, Bluffton.

As we head into Memorial Day weekend, the rows of headstones that mark the final resting place of over 400,000 USA service members should stand as reminders-as should all grave markers at each of our country's 135 national cemeteries-for us to take a moment to set aside our political caterwauling and focus on the objective of the solemn holiday: to honor the men and women who died in battle while serving in the USA military.

Berea's National Rib Cook-Off will be at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds all weekend: noon to 11 p.m. Friday; 11 a.m.to 11 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and 11 a.m.to 7 p.m. Monday. Attendees will then gather for a ceremony in Pioneer Park to include music, and a salute to the men and women that serve our country. The ceremony will feature stories from Upstate residents with memories of a fallen comrade and music from the Upstate Senior Concert Band.
