But the North unexpectedly pulled out of planned peace talks with South Korea last week, objecting to U.S.

If it goes ahead, it will be first meeting between a US and a North Korean leader during more than six decades of hostility, and it would come just months after the North's rapid progress toward attaining a nuclear-tipped missile that could strike America fueled fears of war.

Singapore's United Nations ambassador, Burhan Gafoor, asked the Security Council committee monitoring sanctions against North Korea for a sanctions exemption for the delegation to attend the scheduled June 12 meeting as well as for "preparatory work for the summit".

"There is already good basis and necessary conditions at the moment", Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told reporters at a joint news conference at the State Department with Pompeo. "It's time to solve this once and for all". "But if we make a deal, I think Kim Jong-un is going to be very, very happy". "But all in one would be a lot better".

Many observers had argued before Mr Trump met Mr Moon that there was too much at stake for Washington and Pyongyang not to proceed with the Singapore summit.

"That model would take place if we don't make a deal, most likely".

Asked what he means by "complete", Pompeo said denuclearization would encompass Pyongyang giving up its nuclear weapons capability, missile capability, and the technology behind those capabilities, including engines and systems associated with space launch vehicles.

However, based on his own discussions with the North Korean leader, Pompeo said he was hopeful that Trump could convince Kim to make a strategic decision to denuclearise.

Trump's remarks also came after Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told a House committee Wednesday that the United States was fully prepared to back out of Korea talks.

The North's decision to close the Punggye-ri nuclear test site has generally been seen as a welcome gesture by Kim to set a positive tone ahead of the summit.

"He asked for the meeting, the president agreed to meet with him", Pompeo said.

"There is no need to doubt North Korea's willingness to hold the U.S".

In requesting the exemption, Gafoor said, "The summit will serve as an opportunity to advance the objective of a peaceful resolution of the DPRK nuclear issue and the establishment of peace and stability on the Korean peninsula and in the region". Trump said Tuesday he'd noticed "a little change" in Kim's attitude after the trip. He said they had discussed their mutual goals for the talks. Trump said he was displeased by China's softening of border enforcement measures against North Korea.
