Clinton says he was on the roof of a home, helping to put out fires caused by flying rocks, when an explosion a couple hundred yards away launched a lava bomb that hit him above the ankle.

Blue flames from burning methane are the latest natural phenomena being seen at the eruption of the Kilauea volcano in Hawaii.

"It's very dramatic. It's very eerie", Jim Kauahikaua, a scientists with the US Geological Survey, told reporters Wednesday.

Tam Hunt took photos Monday of his neighbor's house, showing the ominous cracks splitting the ground under the home.

Around 40 homes and structures have been destroyed by lava flow in Puna.

Molten lava crept into the grounds of a geothermal power plant site, as workers rushed to shut down the facility to prevent the uncontrollable release of toxic gases.

Lava from an active fissure nearby had flowed onto the property early this week, posing the risk of toxic gases being released in the event molten rock encroached into any of several pressurized deep-underground wells.

Some lava over the weekend began flowing into the ocean and generated plumes of lava haze.

More than 10,000 residents have been evacuated since the volcanic activity began, due to Kilauea opening up 22 fissures that have leaked slow-moving lava and risky sulphur dioxide.

One potential hazard that appeared to have been brought under control was at the Puna Geothermal Venture (PGV) plant, which provides about a quarter of the Big Island's electricity. The plant harnesses heat and steam from the earth's core to spin turbines to generate power.

A flammable gas called pentane is used as part of the process, though officials earlier this month removed 50,000 gallons (190,000 liters) of the gas from the plant to reduce the chance of explosions.

Tourism officials cheered news that a Norwegian Cruise Lines ship that tours the Hawaiian Islands would resume stopping in Kailua-Kona next week.

The company said it would resume calling on Hilo, a town on the eastern side of the island closer to the lava, when conditions allow.
