President Donald Trump on Thursday strongly pushed the claim that the Federal Bureau of Investigation spied on his campaign with an inside informant.

"Wow, word seems to be coming out that the Obama FBI "SPIED ON THE TRUMP CAMPAIGN WITH AN EMBEDDED INFORMANT", Mr Trump tweeted. At least one government informant met several times with two of Trump's former campaign aides, officials have said.

And in a third tweet, Trump said: "Despite the disgusting, illegal and unwarranted Witch Hunt, we have had the most successful first 17 month Administration in United States history - by far!"

The suggestion seems meant to undercut the work by special counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election.

The Times report provided a detailed account of the initial stages of the FBI's investigation of Russia's interference in the 2016 election and whether the Trump campaign or anyone affiliated with it was privy to Russia's attempts.

Speaking Thursday on "Fox and Friends", the former NY mayor said Trump will only sit down with Mueller if "we feel there's a way to shorten this thing". "Sorry to the Fake News Media and 'Haters, ' but that's the way it is!"

The attacks on Mueller, a Republican and former FBI director, were expected to continue as the investigation entered its second year, according to Giuliani.

Giuliani's team has been weighing whether to allow Trump to sit for an interview with Mueller.

"Mueller should now bring this to a close", said Giuliani.

He added: "Maybe a special counsel, special prosecutor, never should have been appointed". They were apparently part of the FBI's frenzied, secretive effort to determine whether the Trump campaign was colluding with the Russian government while taking pains not to influence the election results.

The top-secret intelligence source has been the subject of a showdown between key Trump allies in Congress and the Justice Department.

After combing through the anti-Trump and pro-Hillary Clinton text messages exchanged by FBI officials Peter Strzok and Lisa Page, McCarthy noted that the texts show "that they obviously opened an investigation late July, early August of 2016".
