On Tuesday, the KCNA informed that North Korea's authorities revoked negotiations with Seoul that were scheduled for May 16, because of the Max Thunder joint military exercises between the US and South Korea that had started on May 11.

The episode should remind us that, as long as North Korea has nuclear weapons, we are a hair's breadth from nuclear war.

Pyongyang's official criticized Seoul for participation in joint military exercises with the United States, noting that the South supports Washington's position that comes down to the need to continue to exert maximum pressure over the North until its total denuclearization.

Donald Trump says any denuclearisation deal with North Korea would protect Kim Jong-un as the nation's leader, as the US President maintains their historic meeting will go ahead.

The ultimatum was clear, but Trump's understanding of the history of disarmament in Libya was not. "We went in there to beat him".

The model Bolton was referring to was Gaddafi's agreement in December 2003 to surrender his embryonic nuclear weapons programme, which included allowing his uranium centrifuges to be shipped out to the US.

Gaddafi gained global acceptance as a result, and he ruled for eight more years until a popular uprising plunged his country into civil war. In Libya, we decimated that country.

Gaddafi died within six months of the U.S. intervention, but it was his own people who killed him after finding his hideout and dragging him through the streets. Bolton has repeatedly suggested the Libya model of unilateral disarmament for North Korea, most recently on Sunday.

Mr Trump has raised expectations for success even as many analysts have been sceptical about the chances of bridging the gap because of questions about North Korea's willingness to give up a nuclear arsenal that it says can hit the US. "But if we make a deal, I think KJU is going to be very, very happy", Trump said.

On Tuesday, North Korea threatened to back out of the talks, spewed vitriolic anti-US rhetoric, and reasserted itself as a nuclear power.

The drastic change in tone came after months of easing tension and just days after North Korea had announced it would publicly shut its nuclear test site next week and improved the mood for a United States summit by releasing the three detained Americans last week. If the summit fails to achieve peace and agreement, the highest cards in both countries' diplomatic decks have been played, and all that remains is confrontation.

Mr Trump said that as far as he is aware, the meeting with Mr Kim in Singapore was going ahead as planned.
