Kane leads England's squad for World Cup

Few Surprises in Gareth Southgate's England World Cup Squad Lineker says England should 'write off' World Cup

England players, pundits and other figures from the football world have posted their reactions to Gareth Southgate's World Cup squad, which was announced on Wednesday afternoon.

Goalkeepers: Jack Butland (Stoke City), Jordan Pickford (Everton), Nick Pope (Burnley). He did start nine of England's 10 World Cup qualification games, however, conceding only three goals and producing a superb display in Slovenia.

The selection of Alexander-Arnold, comes after some fine performances in Liverpool's run to the Champions League final.

The omissions are the right call and while the younger picks - Trent Alexander-Arnold is uncapped and just 19 - may lack the experience of those they have replaced, Southgate is not exactly blessed with a variety of alternative options.

England coach Gareth Southgate stuck to his principles and selected a young, energetic and flexible group of 23 players who can fit a variety of formations but will be short of experience at major tournaments.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Fabian Delph were preferred to the Liverpool midfielder who has struggled with injury problems this season. Delph played mostly as a left back this season for Man City, the Premier League champion.

Today, Gareth Southgate named Rashford as one of the four strikers he'll bring to Russian Federation in June. Chelsea stalwart Gary Cahill has received a call-up despite suspicions he would be culled.

Here are 5 players who didn't make the cut for England's World Cup campaign. Gary Cahill is likely to lead the Three Lions at the World Cup. Jamie Vardy the only player in the squad who didn't represent England at youth level and Harry Maguire the only player plus his Leicester teammate who hasn't represented England at multiple youth levels.

But 23 England caps and a European Championship role later, he is heading to the World Cup.

We have a lot of energy and athleticism in the team but also players equally comfortable in possession.

"The selection process has been over months really, it's not just been the last few weeks".

There can be no escaping the fact that this squad is largely unproven at worldwide level, with the shadow of Euro 2016 and the defeat against Iceland still hanging over the team at a major tournament. England first play Tunisia four days later, before facing Panama (June 24) and Belgium on June 28.

However, his lack of fitness means he has to settle with a stand-by place alongside Jake Livermore, Tom Heaton, James Tarkowski and Lewis Cook.
