Sadr eyes Govt as poll upset rocks Iraq

5 things you need to know now Moqtada al-Sadr poised for victory in Iraqi election

A populist coalition organized by influential Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr emerged as the front-runner Monday with more than half the vote counted in Iraq's national elections.

The IHEC found that Hadi al-Amiri's coalition is in second place, and current Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi's group is listed in third place.

In recent years, Mr Sadr has distanced himself from Iran and reinvented himself as an Iraqi nationalist and anti-corruption campaigner. Despite a third place finish, Abadi could potentially still remain prime minister after the government coalition is formed.

Describing Abadi as a figure who has the support of both Iran and the United States, Shargh wrote, "Even though Abadi achieved significant domestic and global success through the victory over Daesh [Islamic State], he failed to overcome economic problems, and this caused him not to achieve the results he expected in this election".

"If we want to change things then the prime minister needs to come from Marching Towards Reform", said Salah Jamal, 24.

MacCallum added that Trump's top military officials, Defense Secretary James Mattis and Joint Chiefs Chairman Marine Corps Gen. Joe Dunford Jr. both seek to continue to work with the Iraqi government in a constructive way. The commission gave no indication on when further results would be announced.

But after 14 years, more than $1 trillion, millions of Iraqi dead and thousands of US troops killed and maimed, the USA now has less influence over Iraq than it had while former Central Intelligence Agency operative Saddam Hussein was in power.

The electoral commission released results from 10 of 19 provinces Sunday night, including tallies from Baghdad and Basra provinces.

Iraqi national elections were held on Saturday and 44 percent of eligible voters headed to the polls.

"Iran perceives Sadr as an unstable entity. and the U.S. does not see him as an ally. there are unpredictable scenarios now surrounding the formation of the new government". Whoever wins the most seats must negotiate a coalition government in order to have a majority in parliament.

Celebrations erupted in Baghdad's Sadr City, an impoverished quarter that is home to about 3 million people and is named after the cleric's father, Ayatollah Mohammed Sadeq al-Sadr, who was killed by suspected agents of Saddam Hussein in 1999.
