Facebook has deleted millions of spam posts and fake accounts

Facebook Throws More Cash at a Tough Problem: Stamping Out Bad Content Facebook says it shut down 1.3 BILLION fake accounts in the last six months as hate speech, terrorism and violence

Guy Rosen, VP of Product Management, said most of the action Facebook takes to remove bad content revolves around fake accounts and spam. This is in addition to the millions of fake account attempts Facebook said it prevents daily from ever registering with Facebook.

The prevalence of graphic violence was higher and received 22 to 27 views-an increase from the previous quarter that suggests more Facebook users are sharing violent content on the platform, the company said. The company says more than 96 percent of the posts removed by Facebook for featuring sex, nudity or terrorism-related content were flagged by monitoring software before any users reported them. Overall, we estimate that out of every 10,000 pieces of content viewed on Facebook, seven to nine views were of content that violated our adult nudity and pornography standards.

- Facebook took enforcement action against 21 million posts containing nudity.

Meanwhile, Facebook's rate of squashing fake accounts is actually decreasing.

In the first quarter of 2018, Facebook removed 2.5 million pieces of hate speech from its social network. It said the rise was due to improvements in detection.

Facebook released the data not to brag, but instead, the company said in a statement that it's offering up its statistics so users can judge its performance themselves. However for hate speech, Rosen said, "our technology still doesn't work that well".

Facebook previously estimated fake accounts as accounting for 3 percent to 4 percent of its monthly active users.

Small doses of nudity and graphic violence still make their way onto Facebook, even as the company is getting better at detecting some objectionable content, according to a new report. The company attributed the decline to the "variability of our detection technology's ability to find and flag" fakes. Facebook said that Zuckerberg "has no plans to travel to the United Kingdom", said Damian Collins, the leader of the UK's Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee, in a statement Tuesday.

"We believe that increased transparency tends to lead to increased accountability and responsibility over time, and publishing this information will push us to improve more quickly too", wrote Rosen.

Also, it claims to have disabled 583 million fake accounts.

"Today's report gives you a detailed description of our internal processes and data methodology".

The numbers were disclosed in a report Tuesday that breakdown how much material Facebook removes for violating service terms.

Since the fallout over political firm Cambridge Analytica obtaining millions of Facebook users' data without their permission, Facebook reiterated its commitment to being more transparent.
