However, research by Kent University suggests a drive to vaccinate the entire population wouldn't be an effective way of stopping the disease spread. "Due to its huge swathes of forest, the DRC is a reservoir for the virus, making the country particularly susceptible to outbreaks of Ebola", he says.

The outbreak is contained to the Democratic Republic of the Congo so far.

Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia have recorded deadly outbreaks of the disease in the last four years.

Trump's requests for the cut to Ebola response funds, which were put in place by Obama in 2015, came on March 8, the same day that the new outbreak of Ebola - which has 32 known victims including the 18 dead - was first revealed. Two of those cases are confirmed to be Ebola.

Ebola is thought to be spread over long distances by fruit bats and is often transmitted to humans through contaminated bush meat. On Thursday, Congo announced another Ebola-linked death - the first since the rescissions request - and said that nine new cases had emerged. Most outbreaks have originated in Africa or from lab accidents elsewhere, and have remained small-but people traveling from sites of a 2014 outbreak that roiled west Africa led to isolated cases in locations including the U.K., Italy, Spain and the U.S. Key partners, skilled in working in Ebola outbreak settings, have been mobilized, such as Doctors Without Borders, the WFP, UNICEF-which helps with communication and sanitation activities-and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, which helps perform safe burials.

According to the World Health Organization, this is the DRC's ninth outbreak, since the discovery of the Ebola virus in the country in 1976.

World Health Organization now has a team on the ground along with partner Médecins Sans Frontieres (MSF), and will invole an additional team of between 20-40 specialists in epidemiology, logistics, contact-tracing, and vaccination programmes, in the coming days. The patients presented with fever, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, myalgia and arthralgia, and some also showed haemorrhagic signs and symptoms.

Ebola symptoms usually start within two to 21 days of becoming infected. The government assures Kenyans and travellers that there is no Ebola case. In addition to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, past Ebola outbreaks have occurred in Gabon, South Sudan, Ivory Coast, Uganda, Republic of Congo and South Africa. The last death in the cluster was reported in February, and so far investigators haven't turned up an epidemiologic links between the previous and current outbreaks.
