The Delhi Police arrested the two on Tuesday. The victim signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) and paid Rs 87.2 lakh on different occasions for arranging special anti-radiation suits to be worn by scientists during testing, fees of the scientists and for chemicals required for testing. According to reports, they even dress their part as space scientists. "They said tests were scheduled in Hapur, but could not be held as the place was "not conducive".
Police told Indian media the men passed off the metal plate as a "rare piece of copper", which they said was "struck by thunderbolt" giving the ability to attract rice.
Once the complaint was lodged, the police arrested the Brar duo who deals in antique/rare metals. He again entered into an MoU and paid Rs 5.6 lakh, Rs 3.5 lakh and Rs 42 lakh for the same stuff he had paid earlier. Later, the victim came to know that the said scientist' was working with the accused for Rs 20,000, police said. At social gatherings, the father-son duo performed this trick, and if it drew the attention of any potential customer, they would continuously follow up with him and pose as a "rice-puller seller".
The conmen told the victim that NASA was willing to pay around ₹375 billion for a device called the "Rice Puller". During the investigation, the RP copper plate, alleged anti-radiation suits, alleged anti-radiation chemical stickers were recovered from the accused along with laptop, printer, blank letter heads of Rehan Metals, cheque books, fake IDs and an Audi auto.
