The foreign secretary said he saw no advantage in losing the "handcuffs" the deal imposed on Iran's nuclear ambitions and only Tehran would benefit from exiting the deal.

"Who would make that deal?" he asked in 2016.

With time running out before the May 12 deadline by which US President Donald Trump is to decide whether to pull out of the Iran nuclear deal, the leaders of Israel and Iran weighed in on Sunday (May 6), with one calling the agreement "fatally flawed" and the other warning of "historic regret" if the United States rips up the deal. The International Atomic Energy Agency, the United Nations' nuclear-watchdog agency, has issued 11 reports so far confirming Iran's compliance with the deal.

The president would have to sign additional executive orders, and take other legal steps, to renew USA sanctions on about 400 other formerly blacklisted Iranian entities and individuals.

Restrictions on Iran's nuclear activities begin expiring in 2025. Project Amad, which beginning in the early 1990s put Iran on a path to "design, produce and test... five warheads, each with a 10 kiloton TNT yield, for integration on a missile".

Kim Darroch said Britain has ideas for dealing with those concerns.

As the May 12 USA decision point nears, Iranian leaders have shuffled between placatory and hawkish comments, although the hardliners have taken a uncompromising stance. Darroch said he'd personally lobbied national security adviser John Bolton as well. It's unclear whether Iran would agree to those terms.

"We have been talking at senior official level to the administration with our French and German colleagues for several weeks now. We'll see what happens, but I think if anything what's happening today and what's happened over the last little while and what we've learned has really shown that I've been 100 percent right".

Trump has called the JCPOA, which was negotiated under his predecessor Barack Obama, the "worst deal ever" and even threatened to tear it up.

The British foreign secretary is traveling to the United States on Sunday for a two-day visit, during which he will meet Vice President Mike Pence and National Security Adviser John Bolton, Britain said.

UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson traveled to Washington, DC in a last-ditch effort to convince the White House to keep the deal.

Investigators were reportedly told to research their personal lives, political careers, relationships or benefits they could have obtained from reaching the deal, according to documents obtained by The Observer, the Sunday edition of the British newspaper The Guardian. Last month, French President Emmanuel Macron made an impassioned case to Trump and in a talk to a joint session of Congress against scrapping the deal.
