Police return stolen Senate mace

UPDATE The Mace of the Senate Hijacked at the National Assembly Police return stolen Senate mace
Beatrice Douglas | 21 April, 2018, 13:48

On Wednesday, at about 11.30am, five persons beat the security in the National Assembly and snatched the mace, while the day's legislative business was ongoing.

On Thursday, the Nigerian Police said they had recovered the stolen mace after a "patriotic passer-by" spotted it lying by Abuja's City Gate.

The Nigerian police have returned the mace stolen by some hoodlums from the Senate on Wednesday.

But this, the party said did not mean Senator Omo-Agege should not have taken the law into his hands forcing himself into the Senate Chambers after claiming to have sued the Senate to court on account of the suspension.

"However, the security of this parliament is fully outside the control of the National Assembly".

Abuja (Sundiata Post)- The culprits in the Wednesday's invasion of the Senate chamber by armed men will not go unpunished, the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, has assured the nation.

He also replied a text message on the arrest of the suspects from Daily Trust as simply: "No update yet please".

Sources in the National Assembly told New Telegraph that the invasion of the red chamber and taking away the mace became the favoured option of the group.

He later apologised to his colleagues after the senate had directed its Ethics and Privileges Committee to investigate the matter.

Hours later a top police officer handed the mace over to Omolori, Clerk of the National Assembly. We'll get to the root of this matter.

The Attorney General of the Federation, Mr. Abubakar Malami (SAN); the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris; the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, Mr. Sadiq Bello, and the Director General of the DSS, Mr. Lawal Daura, were joined as the respondents. "We will be inviting them next week to brief us".

"The incident at the senate is hard for one to understand how it happened".

"What I think happened was that Omo-Agege was betrayed".

He was reported to have said the Senate's decision was targeted at President Muhammadu Buhari.
