This timing will lead many to speculate about what may have caused Twitter to go down.

The social network, Twitter, went offline for users around the world.

According to the website downdetector.com, thousands of users complained about the outage, which was concentrated in the USA, United Kingdom and Japan.

Over 6,500 users had complained about the disruption, according to Down Detector, a site that picks up on these sorts of fails. There was much distress among the Twitterati who waited in anticipation for the website to recover. The app also seems to be affected by the outage as users are not able to tweet and refresh the news feed.

The error message reads, "Cannot retrieve tweets at this moment".

A lot of online tracking services like Downdetector and Downrightnow have shown huge jump in reports from users on Twitter. The error message adds, 'Thanks for noticing-we're going to fix it up and have things back to normal soon'.
