Laurel Hubbard of New Zealand competes in the Women's +90kg division during the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast April 10, 2018.

Commonwealth Games Federation chief executive David Grevemberg said the issue needs "robust debate".

The New Zealander, whose participation was criticized as "unfair" by the Samoan team, lifted 120kg in the snatch but injured her arm on a failed third attempt after raising the weight dramatically to 132kg.

"At this stage we don't know the exact details of the injury".

"A man is a man and a woman is a woman and I know a lot of changes have gone through, but in the past Laurel Hubbard used to be a male champion weightlifter", he told reporters before the competition began Monday.

But she bailed out of her first attempt at the clean and jerk, and could not return to push her claims.

Hubbard said afterward she suspected a ruptured ligament but on Tuesday confirmed the injury could be "career-ending", AFP reported.

Laurel Hubbard was born in 1978 in New Zealand.

Hubbard participated in the games twice before she transitioned in 2014.

'The strength is still there and I think it's very unfair, and for all females it's unfair.

"I have no regrets about the attempts I made, because I believe that to be true to sport you really have to try to be the best that you can, and I'm happy with the decisions that were made". She took part in last year's world championships, winning a silver medal, after the IWF ruled she'd undergone at least a year of hormone therapy and had recorded a sufficiently low level of testosterone.

Hubbard's presence had been criticised by some officials from rival countries, but she received a huge roar of support when she was introduced to the crowd.

Meanwhile, Australian Weightlifting Federation CEO Michael Keelan wrote to a number of governing bodies to express his concerns.

Samoa's Feagaiga Stowers, 17, took gold on Australia's Gold Coast ahead of Nauru's Charisma Amoe-Tarrant.

Hubbard, 40, represented New Zealand as Gavin Hubbard before she transitioned.

"But no indication today that they were anything other than fantastic", she said, "A real credit to Australian people and broader sporting community".

Grevemberg said what the International Olympic Committee was doing in regard to transgender athletes was still evolving but stressed Hubbard had met the qualification criteria.

A Kiwi TV commentator described the second as a "dramatic twist" after Hubbard had appeared effectively on her solution to the gold medal.
