Syria says suspected US missiles fired at air base; Washington denies strike
10 April, 2018, 20:25
A missile attack on a Syrian military airport left several dead and wounded, state media said Monday, after the U.S. warned Damascus and its allies over an earlier suspected chemical attack on a rebel-held town.
On Saturday, activists said the Syrian forces used chlorine gas in an attack against Douma, the last rebel-held area in the Eastern Ghouta countryside of Damascus.
President Trump recently told USA military leaders to begin making plans to withdraw troops from Syria, but a senior administration official told NBC that Trump reluctantly agreed to keep troops in Syria for an unspecified amount of time in order to defeat ISIS.
According to the source, the Syrian air defense systems shot down eight missiles while repelling the attack. When asked by interviewers what Israel's interest in such an attack was, Ben Eliyahu said that it was part of the ongoing efforts to prevent Iran from establishing a base in Syria.
Syrian state TV meanwhile quoted the unnamed military official as saying Israeli F-15 warplanes had fired several missiles while flying over neighbouring Lebanon.
The strikes came one day after a suspected chemical gas attack near Damascus in Syria, where dozens of people have been killed.

The agency said it was likely "an American aggression" but US officials say the United States had not launched airstrikes on Syria.
As global officials worked to try to confirm Saturday's chemical attack on Douma, a Syria medical relief group said at least 60 people had been killed there and more than 1,000 injured in several sites.
"Through the relevant channels we already conveyed to the USA that armed force under mendacious pretext against Syria - where, at the request of the legitimate government of a country, Russian troops have been deployed - could lead to grave repercussions", he said. The government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad denied carrying out the attack.
Israel did not comment on Monday's missile strike.
Israel sent fighter jets into Syria to down an Iranian drone that took off from there in February. It also, perhaps, came as a bit of a surprise as Trump has often been criticised for his lack of the same towards his Russian counterpart for his country's alleged involvement in the meddling of the 2016 U.S. presidential election.
The Syrian opposition blamed the suspected chemical attack on Saturday in the town of Douma on government forces. "If it's Russian Federation, if it's Syria, if it's Iran, if it's all of them together, we'll figure it out", Trump said.
Haley accused Russian Federation of protecting Syria at the United Nations while Moscow's military advisers in Damascus are helping Assad wage a "starve or surrender campaign" against Syrian civilians that includes the use of chemical weapons.
