Timothy Cunningham, a 35-year-old Centers For Disease Control and Prevention epidemiologist, vanished after leaving work February 12 complaining he felt unwell; some seven weeks later, his decomposed body was spotted by fishermen in a rugged area along the banks of the Atlanta area's Chattahoochee River, according to officials.

"The Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office has identified the body recovered in the Chattahoochee River in NW Atlanta late Tuesday to be missing CDC employee Timothy Cunningham", the Atlanta Police Department tweeted on Thursday.

There were no signs of foul play in the death of a US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention epidemiologist who likely drowned, officials said Thursday.

Timothy Cunningham's remains were found in the Chattahoochee River in northwest Atlanta on Tuesday.

According to Major Michael O'Connor, with the Major Crimes Section of the Atlanta Police Department, the river is not far from Cunningham's home. "During that search, we did not find any indication or signs of a body being at the river at that time".

During the morning of his disappearance, his mother said that she received a text from Cunningham.

"The most unusual factor in this case is that every single belonging that we are aware of was located in the residence", O'Connor previously told reporters.

O'Connor addressed that rumor last month, noting that Cunningham was with the chronic disease unit and not the infectious disease unit.

About a week before his disappearance, Cunningham was told by his CDC supervisor that he would not get a promotion; an explanation was given to him on February 12 - the Monday he went missing.

11 Alive reports that the information the Atlanta Police received came directly from the CDC.

The CDC's director in mid-March issued a statement denying that Cunningham hadn't gotten a promotion and noting that he'd been promoted in July.

By outward appearances, Cunningham seemed to have a successful career. He held two degrees from Harvard University.

His CDC biography says he was a "team lead" with the Division of Population Health and had deployed for several public health emergencies "including Superstorm Sandy, Ebola, and Zika".

There are still many unanswered questions surrounding Cunningham's disappearance and what led up to his death.

Four times since their son went missing, Cunningham's parents have been told that a body had been found.
