His latest comment comes amid growing public outrage over the misuse of the private information of tens of millions Facebook users by Cambridge Analytica, the firm that claimed it helped US President Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election.

WhatsApp co-founder Brian Acton on Tuesday tweeted "Delete Facebook" even as chorus grows louder against the social media giant after a huge security breach was revealed recently.

Acton, whose product was bought by Facebook in 2014 for a whopping $16 billion, took to the microblogging platform and said "It is time".

The report went on to add that WhatsApp declined to comment on the statement while Acton "did not immediately respond to a request for comment".

Definitely a weird tweet from Acton-let's see what he has to say next about his tweet, and whether it was actually him sending the message or a "hacker".

Meanwhile, The Guardian quotes a Facebook spokeswoman saying, "Mark, Sheryl and their teams are working around the clock to get all the facts and take the appropriate action moving forward, because they understand the seriousness of this issue". There are quite a few tweets around the hashtag, with the social network being accused of not taking user privacy and data seriously. That creator then passed on the data to Cambridge Analytica, which is against Facebook's policy. It is still not clear as to why Acton has asked to delete Facebook.

The scandal has been growing since Friday night, when Facebook said it had suspended the accounts of data firm Cambridge Analytica, its parent company, psychology professor at the University of Cambridge named Dr. Aleksandr Kogan and whistleblower Christopher Wylie.

This is not the first time Acton has raised his voice against Facebook.
