Riding-sharing company Uber has pulled all of its self-driving cars after a woman was reportedly killed by one if its autonomous vehicles in the United States.

Outside Phoenix, Arizona, in a suburb called Tempe, a self-driving Uber SUV struck a woman around 10 PM on Sunday night. She later died at a hospital.

According to a Tempe Police report, the Uber auto was operating in autonomous mode though there was a human safety driver in the vehicle. No passengers were inside.

The vehicle involved in the crash was a Volvo XC90, which Uber had been using to test its autonomous technology.

On social media, Uber issued a statement confirming that the company was aware of what had happened and that they would work with police in the ongoing investigation. The National Transportation Safety Board also confirmed it's opening an investigation. However, the modified cars have sensors created to detect pedestrians and cyclists and are supposed to react accordingly.

As with the fatal Tesla crash, the deadly Uber accident is likely to stoke concerns that the industry is moving too fast to deploy self-driving vehicles.

"Our hearts go out to the victim's family", Uber said in its statement.

Tempe Police confirmed the death in a statement, and said there was a driver in the vehicle at the time of the accident.

More on-road testing is scheduled for this year and he said the incident has not resulted in any immediate change to that schedule.

'It was only a matter of time, this is why self driving cars will never become a thing because who do you blame now? the guy who was behind the wheel now crying "the auto did it", he was supposed to be in control of the vehicle not the auto controlling him, you have one job ...try actually doing it'.

The federal government has voluntary guidelines for companies that want to test autonomous vehicles, leaving much of the regulation up to states.

Concerns over the safety of autonomous vehicles flared in July 2016 when a man driving a Tesla Model S in semi-autonomous "Autopilot" mode died when his auto struck a tractor-trailer. Its fleet of self-driving Volvos arrived in Arizona after being banned from Californian roads over safety fears.
