France suing Google, Apple over mobile developer contract terms

France To Sue Google Apple Over Developer Contracts Says Minister France said it will seek fines of 2 million euros from Google and Apple

Bruno Le Maire said on Wednesday that he plans to take both tech giants to court for unfair contracts imposed upon French start-up firms. "That's unacceptable. It's not the economy we want". The country might also seek the elimination of these unilateral contract terms and standardized commissions, which could create significant headaches for both Google and Apple.

'I consider that Google and Apple, as powerful as they are, shouldn't treat our start-ups and our developers in the way they do today, ' said Le Maire. Le Maire said that the companies are taking advantage of French developers with the said practices and would be fined in "millions of euros"(via Reuters and Bloomberg).

In an interview with RTL Radio, the Minister denounced the prices and contractual terms imposed by the Internet giants on the nation's developers. The company said it has been collaborating with the French fraud office on several matters over the past few years, including its Google Play app store. "My responsibility is to ensure economic law and order", said Le Maire. It was revealed in December 2017 that the Finance Ministry is seeking to fine Amazon 10 million euros. French authorities have denied that the sudden crackdown on tech firms has any relation to the Unite States' new tariffs and taxes, however, France has recently begun speaking out against tech firms with a finance ministry official recently stating that Europe "needs to stand up and defend its own interests".

Earlier this month, Le Maire told the French newspaper Le Journal du Dimanche that the European Union was planning a new tax rate for tech giants like Apple, Google, Facebook and Amazon later this month after years of frustration that the companies were paying too little tax from European profits by rerouting the revenues into low-tax havens like Luxembourg and Ireland.
