But if this was a litmus test to see how they might cope with the pressure of knockout matches when they host next year's World Cup, England came through it with flying colours, dominating this contest from start to finish to wrap up a sixth successive ODI series win.

Kane Williamson's side tumbled to 93-6 in Taylor's absence, before Mitchell Santner (67) and Henry Nicholls (55) revived the innings with a stand of 84 for the seventh wicket.

Bairstow and Alex Hales put on 155 for the first wicket as England rampaged towards their small target of 224.

The 34-year-old produced a match-winning unbeaten 181 in the fourth one-day worldwide on Wednesday, despite having aggravated a thigh injury and suffering cramps that restricted his movement and forced him to limp singles in the successful run chase. But exemplary new ball work from Mark Wood and Chris Woakes - named man of the series for his 10 wickets at 20.30 - reduced the Blackcaps to 26 for two, before Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali combined, bowling their full allocations through unhindered, to inflict a collapse of four wickets for 33 runs.

However, it was Bairstow, striking nine fours and six sixes during a brutal 60-ball knock, who stole the show.

The platform for the triumph was laid early when England's bowlers constricted New Zealand's top order.

Root batted on, powerless as a series of partners departed, to reach his 11th ODI century from 99 balls before being dismissed in the 48th over, at which stage England had lost 7-28.

"Throughout this series, there were some very good one-off performances, but it probably overshadowed a batting line-up that hasn't quite fired".

Once opener Martin Guptill fell for 47, New Zealand looked close to subsiding.

With Grant Elliot's retirement, Luke Ronchi's inconsistency and Corey Anderson's hit-miss form, New Zealand had plenty to look after as far as ODI cricket goes.

But however, this two teams have returned from the last T20I tournament which was Trans Tasman Tri Series where Australia and New Zealand were the local team and England was the guest team. They got victory in the first match.

Bairstow had earlier held a stunning, running catch at deep mid-wicket to remove Tim Southee. Nicholls hit Root's off-spin for six but he top-edged Tom Curran to short leg at an inopportune moment.

"It's different from batting in the middle order but my job now is to score big hundreds and contribute match-winning scores", said man-of-the-match Bairstow, who also took a brilliant, diving one-handed catch on the boundary. "It was a brilliant innings by Jonny - hitting the ball cleanly like he has all series". Had England batted first, or if they had been forced to chase 300, then there would have been a clearer indication of whether they are becoming mentally strong enough to win a global tournament, in comparison to all previous England one-day sides that have buckled.

The seven wicket victory England earned was brilliantly set up by the England bowlers who quickly assessed conditions and put the Black Caps on the back foot. "Following that was always going to be hard but I thought our spinners really did that and created a lot of chances".
