49ers' Richard Sherman: Recent release has 'reignited' fire inside him

Sherman represented himself in negotiations.

The tell on that epiphany came Monday in Peter King's intriguing Sports Illustrated story about how the Sherman-to-49ers deal transpired. ESPN first reported the three-year agreement.

He said, I'm going to bet on myself. I think Richard's going to have a great year next year.

"I love the fan base to death, and I loved playing there", Sherman said.

Another fan took his rage to the road. He's familiar with the defensive scheme and the coordinator running it, Robert Saleh, a former Seahawks assistant who joined Sherman, Sherman's fiancee Ashley and coach Kyle Shanahan at Friday night's recruitment dinner in Los Gatos. Shead is expected to visit Detroit later this week but he could also re-sign with the Seahawks at any time now that he has been released.

Peters, with an NFL-leading 19 interceptions since 2015, is nearly five years younger than Sherman, who turns 30 at the end of this month. However, Steve Wyche of NFL Network, who spoke with general manager John Lynch, gets the impression that San Francisco will be less aggressive than anticipated. "It's 75 degrees and sunny outside, we've got [Garoppolo] - who wouldn't want to be here?" Sherman will turn 30 years old later this month and is coming off a season-ending Achilles tear. He expects to be physically cleared for training camp. Unheard of. And he did so with one of the top negotiators in the entire league. They also agreed on another thing: the Seahawks' decision to release Sherman didn't happen overnight, and there were fractures in the relationship that predated any contract talks.

In the case of cornerback Richard Sherman, it will be especially weird to see him not in a Seattle Seahawks uniform. Adding a player like Sherman only adds to that excitement. That leaves 14 other games, however, for him to make a deeper impact for a 49ers franchise he's tormented as their hated rival since 2011. After having his congratulatory handshake rebuffed by Crabtree, Sherman goes off on camera, shouting insults about Crabtree and giving the 49ers the choke sign. The fan called Sherman a "traitor". Imagine if Sherman picks of Russell Wilson in Seattle or here in the Bay. Could this have possibly played a role in him signing in San Francisco as well?

Sherman's contract is very low-risk for the 49ers.

If anyone had been following the Seahawks this offseason, Sherman's statements may not come as a surprise. Sherman now leads the National Football League in interceptions since he was drafted in 2011 and his 99 pass deflections also leads the entire NFL. No player with 300-plus targets has allowed a lower completion percentage (47.4) or passer rating (50.9) over the span either. For now, the Niners are hoping that Sherman won't be the only free agent drawn to the organization in part because of Garoppolo over the next few days. Thomas wasn't impressed with the incentive-filled contract and he let Sherman know on Twitter.

A four-time Pro Bowl player, Sherman played in nine games last season, recording 35 tackles and two interceptions.
