There are preliminary reports of 30 shots fired outside the main dining area.

One of the nation's largest veterans care facilities in the country was put on lockdown Friday morning after reports of an active-shooter and hostage situation, facility officials said.

A witness told KPIX 5 dozens of emergency vehicles were racing along Highway 29 toward the veterans home, including at least four ambulances.

Larry Kamer told The Associated Press that his wife, Devereaux Smith, was at the party and told him by phone that the gunman had entered the room quietly, letting some people leave while taking others hostage.

Residents were temporarily evacuated from the veterans home in October when fires raged through Napa County.

Jan Thornton was among hundreds of relatives anxious sick about their loved ones.

Thornton says she's still shaking and that she hasn't been able to talk to her father.

Still, she worked about the stress of the lockdown on her father, considering his age and that he has post-traumatic stress disorder and some dementia. Amanda Vargas, whose husband is the chief of finance in the home's administrative building, said she's been in touch with her husband and he is safe.

It is unclear if the shots were live rounds, according to an official from the Veteran's Home.

Local outlets, citing police radio chatter, reported that the gunman is armed with an automatic weapon.

The gunman is believed to be a member of The Pathway Home program for military veterans with emotional trauma, according to the Napa Valley Register. Residents from the home often golf at the club for free, said Jason Boltt at Vintners.
