The airport is now experiencing technical issues at security and check-in desks, causing major interruptions to outbound flights.

"We're experiencing technical issues at T1 and T2 causing interruptions to passenger processing and delays", a Tweet from Sydney Airport said just after 6.00am.

Jetstar expects all their flights will be back on schedule by midday, after its morning flights were delayed by an hour on average.

All the systems were operating as normal by late morning, the airport said in its Twitter page.

Virgin Australia said it was holding some flights to minimise disruptions and was working to re-accommodate those affected.

'There will be some impact to our flights today as a result.

One passenger reported that passengers on all flights that had boarded but not taken off were offloaded and asked to go through the security screening process again, causing "chaos".

The security screening has also been closed as Queensland Police investigate the matter.

Passengers who are heading to Sydney Airport this morning are being warned of MAJOR delays and to avoid the terminals (if they can).

The glitch affected outbound flights from its global terminal and one of its two domestic terminals.

"The AFP is assisting Brisbane Airport security staff following a routine passenger screening matter", a statement from the Australian Federal Police said.

It affected systems including the airport's CCTV, meaning passengers could not be screened for about two hours.
