The Eagles came out all guns blazing for the second half and were rewarded with a penalty in the 55th minute after Ciaran Clark tugged Benteke's shirt in the box.

Newcastle resisted intense pressure from Crystal Palace to earn a 1-1 draw at Selhurst Park that again took them clear of the bottom three.

Palace ended the first half on top, but the ball was not falling for them inside the penalty area and Newcastle were able to head into half time with a rare lead, with Diame's goal their first during the opening 45 minutes of a league game since December 23.

Newcastle might have been two goals up at halftime but Palace goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey made two good saves in quick succession, blocking Brazilian winger Kenedy's shot with his chest then diving to his left to palm away Perez's effort from the rebound.

Palace manager Roy Hodgson thought his side's performance after half time deserved a maximum points haul.

Wilfred Zaha squandered a ideal opportunity to give Palace the early advantage in the opening two minutes after being played through by Luka Milivojevic.

Some classy one-touch football created another chance for Zaha, whose close-range effort was blocked by Yedlin, and then Hennessey produced a fine double-save to stop shots from Kenedy and the follow-up from Perez.

Palace were unlucky to not have found the net after Wilfried Zaha's cross from the left was deflected into the path of Benteke but the ball bounced off him two yards from goal.

Van Aanholt created a good chance for Andros Townsend eight minutes into the second half with a unsafe cross from the left, but the winger directed his header well over the bar.

Up stepped Milivojevic to tuck it past Darlow with the Magpies keeper getting a hand to the ball but not quite enough to steer it wide.

The equaliser lifted the crowd and the home players, who enjoyed the better of the chances for the remainder of the second half.
