'Our current libel laws are a sham'

"What did we have?" Bannon has since said in a statement that he continues to support the president.

After the publication by Business Insider, Michelle Goldberg of The New York Times tweeted the page.

Bannon's appearance before the intelligence committee is magnified by comments attributed to him in the newly released book "Fire and Fury" by Michael Wolff about the Trump White House.

Cohen told WSJ that Trump denies "any such occurrence".

After days of silence amid withering criticism from his former colleagues and his largest benefactor, Bannon tried to make amends.

"We are going to take a strong look at our country's libel laws so that when somebody says something that is false and defamatory about someone, that person will have meaningful recourse in our courts", Mr Trump said.

'Our current libel laws are a sham'

The president already has his hands full trying to discredit that probe and by association Special Counsel Robert Mueller, even as Mr. Trump insists he has no intention of firing him.

Wolff liberally quoted former White House strategist Stephen Bannon, who questioned Donald Trump Jr.'s patriotism. He issued a statement Sunday praising the president's eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., whom he was quoted accusing of treasonous behavior in the book.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders last Thursday said Breitbart should "look at and consider" cutting ties with Mr Bannon.

A humiliating defeat for the Republican Party, the upset in Alabama's election was seen to signal the waning influence of Bannon's particular brand of populism, economic nationalism, and anti-immigrant rhetoric, which had resonated widely with the American public one year earlier during the presidential race.

According to the testimony of Fusion GPS head Glenn Simpson, an associate of Mr Trump expressed concerns to the Federal Bureau of Investigation about contacts between Russian Federation and Mr Trump's presidential election campaign team, helping to trigger the probe into possible collusion. How far back is anyone's guess, but it will depend in part on whether Trump gets too cozy with the Republican establishment in Washington and the GOP base becomes disenchanted with the president and begins to think more highly again of Bannon.
