Midwest Storm Predictions Include Snow, Ice, Flooding

State DOT Monitoring Winter Storm Forecast for Western Kentucky Wild whiplash of winter weather to take place Friday
Lisa Bryan | 14 January, 2018, 00:51

A winter storm began with freezing rain Friday morning across southcentral Kentucky and is expected to transition to sleet then snow throughout the day, creating possibly hazardous road conditions.

The NWS says this combination of snow and ice will result in hard travel conditions, including slippery roads and limited visibilities, potentially affecting both the morning and evening commutes on Friday.

The District 2 Snow & Ice Team has determined pre-treating highways with brine will be ineffective for this event due to rainfall totals expected prior to the start of the wintry mix. Significant snow accumulation is expected. Low pressure is expected to develop along the front and enhance the precipitation across northeast OH and northwest PA. Temperatures remain in the 50s and even the lower 60s! After weeks of below-freezing temperatures, most of the East coast warmed to above average this week, with almost two dozen high temperature records possibly set Friday afternoon. Heavier snow of 8 to 12 inches is possible if the storm slips to our south and east, and 2 to 3 inches if it pushes to the north and west.

The temperatures are finally above freezing, but the nasty weather is far from over. Northwest winds will gust as high as 25 to 35 miles per hour this morning, which may blow and drift the fluffier top layer of snow while causing reduced visibilities. This rapid change to colder temperatures means many will see rain change to freezing rain, then sleet and finally snow. The January storm arrives just after a brief period of warmer temperatures this week.

The GFS and European model are hinting that a clipper may zip through the region Tuesday or Wednesday, bringing the potential for snow.

Temperatures will fall into the teens by Friday night and winds will increase to 15-20 miles per hour. "But the later they can come in the more it will allow that to happen". Some areas southeast will still be seeing a wintry mix. Light ice accumulation may end up being the bigger issue for many of us. Thursday will start out quiet, but snow will increase through the western part of the state in the morning, making it through central Montana by the afternoon.

All eyes are still on the storm system set to impact central IN before the week is over and as we get closer it looks like all forms of wintry weather will be IN play.
