Ryland Ward, the last victim of the Sutherland Springs church shooting to leave the hospital, rode home in a fire truck closely followed by an escort of police officers, hospital officials said.

Ryland Ward, now 6 years old, was among the 20 people who were injured in the deadly mass shooting that killed 26 churchgoers, including an unborn child, on November 5.

Ward is one of the youngest survivors of the worst church shooting in US history in which a deranged gunman killed 26 members of the First Baptist Church congregation.

The news comes from a Facebook post by firefighter Rusty Duncan, who pulled Ryland from First Baptist Church after the shooting.

Duncan, a member of the Stockdale Volunteer Fire Department, told San Antonio Express-News that he discovered Ward under the body of Ward's stepmother who died in the course of shielding her son from gunfire.

Ryland's mother reached out to Duncan soon after he was rushed to the hospital. Duncan only knew the boy was alive when Ward tugged on his pant leg. "Well, the doctor says it is okay and I am going to keep my promise to him and I am going to take him home in the fire truck".

Among the injured was now-6-year-old Ryland Ward, who was shot several times.

"I met with her and talked to her, then I was actually able to go to the hospital and see him for the first time".

"He's doing great", Duncan said.

Duncan said that as of this week, Ryland was walking again, with assistance.

The "fighting spirit" turned 6 while he was in the hospital.

Sutherland Springs community members gathered in wait, holding signs including "Welcome home handsome" and "Yay buddy".

Ryland has been undergoing multiple surgeries over the past few months, but is finally in a condition to return home.
