In the wake of criticism about how its news feed can be manipulated and is having a negative effect on users, Facebook is making some big changes to its flagship feature. But this is Facebook's world, and they might change things next week again. The change is likely to encourage publishers to work to create content that is more interactive and less passive. Since then, Zuckerberg has made it a priority to clean up the platform and make it a better environment for Facebook's users. It's worth noting that a lot of people were already not seeing much news in their feeds anyway.

The social networking behemoth is reportedly using artificial intelligence to cull content for the new section.

The experiment is apparently being led by Facebook's News Partnerships team, which is employing human curation and machine learning to fuel the content found in the "Today In" section.

Facebook said today it will tweak the algorithms that control content in users' news feeds to show more things that have been shared by friends and family, and less content from advertisers and publishers. Zuckerberg later said he had been too hasty and dismissive of the concerns.

"By making these changes, I expect the time people spend on Facebook and some measures of engagement will go down", added Mr Zuckerberg. More recently, he began signaling that Facebook was rethinking what it shows people on the site.

On Thursday, he said numerous discussions about Facebook's responsibilities had prompted the company "to get a better handle on some of the negative things that could happen in the system". So they said they wanted to improve the quality of the feed, which kind of does make sense, except when you consider they allow all sorts of advertising content into the newsfeed....if they are getting paid.

The move is part of the company's efforts to help people strengthen relationships on the site.

"As we roll this out, you'll see less public content like posts from businesses, brands, and media", he stated.

"The research shows that when we use social media to connect with people we care about, it can be good for our well-being", Zuckerberg says.

Zuckerberg said he was now focusing his company around the new approach.

The announcement comes amid a broader shift at Facebook. He said he had rethought the way he views his and Facebook's legacy, even if it will cost the company in the short term.
