Peyton Manning favorite to replace Jon Gruden on 'Monday Night Football'

Betsy Taylor | 08 January, 2018, 03:12

That led to the decision to fire Del Rio following his third season and go hard after Gruden, who reportedly will get a 10-year contract worth an estimated $100 million.

Since 2009, Gruden was the color commentator on ESPN's "Monday Night Football" broadcasts.

The worst-kept secret of the week has been confirmed: Jon Gruden will return to coach the Oakland Raiders. The team called a news conference for Tuesday afternoon to introduce Gruden, who coached the Raiders from 1998 to 2001.

The Oakland Raiders announced their decision to hire Gruden via social media and on Twitter.

It was a fun final game for the McDonough/Gruden combination, and whoever ESPN tabs to fill the role will nearly certainly not do the job like Gruden did, for (mostly) better and for worse. In 2016, Oakland won 12 games, which gave Del Rio a four-year extension, but this season the team failed to deliver with a 6-10 2017 season. Following that snowy contest, Raiders owner Al Davis made the trade the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. His Buccaneers beat the Raiders 48-21 in Super Bowl XXXVII.

This would not mark the first time the Raiders brought back a coach for a second stint.

"Coach. great legacy on 'Monday Night Football, ' not only have you lived up to it, you've enhanced it with your performance here", McDonough continued. It won't happen Saturday, because Gruden has obligations with his current employer, ESPN, and it won't be Monday because that's when he's expected to "interview" for his new gig.
