White supremacist faces terror charge after train stopped

Taylor Michael Wilson is accused of terrorism in Nebraska Taylor Michael Wilson is accused of terrorism in Nebraska

An armed Missouri man who forcibly stopped an Amtrak train in Nebraska in October is an "alt-right neo-Nazi" who stockpiled weapons in his home, wanted to "kill black people" during recent protests in St. Louis, and may have been behind two alleged hate crimes in the area, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said. Wilson had broken into a restricted area of the train and was "playing with the controls," according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, until workers and others were able to stop him and subdue, the Lincoln Journal Star reports.

They restrained him for police, who found a loaded.38 caliber handgun in his waistband, an ammunition cartridge in his pocket and more ammunition, a knife, a hammer and a respirator mask in his backpack.

Local authorities charged Wilson with criminal mischief and weapons possession.

After obtaining a warrant, investigators searched the home December 21 and found a stockpile of ammunition and gun accessories including a tactical vest, 11 AR-15 rifle magazines, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, several additional handgun and rifle magazines, gunpowder, and ammunition reloading supplies.

Wilson was a ticketed passenger aboard a train from California to IL on October 22 when he entered a restricted area, sat in the engineer's seat and triggered the emergency brakes in Oxford, Nebraska.

When members of the Federal Bureau of Investigation searched Wilson's St. Charles home they found a stockpile of gun accessories and ammunition behind a camouflaged panel. The FBI believes he traveled with this group to the Charlottesville rally.

Documents unsealed Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Lincoln show 26-year-old Taylor Wilson, of St. Charles, Missouri, is charged with terrorism attacks and other violence against railroad carriers and mass transportation systems. When the Federal Bureau of Investigation spoke with Wilson's roommate, he told the Federal Bureau of Investigation that Wilson had a secret panel behind the refrigerator, NTV reports.

It is believed that Wilson attended the deadly, far-right rally in Charlottesville in August.

Bobbie Garris, a passenger on the California Zephyr, told Nebraska ABC news affiliate NTV that passengers sat in the dark for over an hour after the train came to an abrupt stop.

A Furnas County deputy sent to the scene found Amtrak employees holding Wilson, court documents said.

Amtrak staff restrained Wilson and called the Furnas County Sheriff's Office.

According to the affidavit, Wilson's firearms and electronic devices 'have been used for or obtained in anticipation of engaging in or planning to engage in criminal offenses against the United States'. They also said he had "several" legally purchased firearms, but eventually turned over 15 weapons, including an illegal fully automatic rifle and another illegally converted rifle, court documents say.

Shortly after his arrest, his attorney requested a competency hearing, saying that Wilson "cannot appreciate ... the charges against him ... due to the fact that his mental health issues are now untreated". The affidavit notes that Wilson is the chief suspect in a road rage incident on Interstate 70 in which a white man pointed a gun at a black female in another vehicle.

A search of Wilson's phone found a depiction of a white supremacist banner over a highway and PDF files of "The Anarchist Cookbook", and "The Poor Man's James Bond" and other works about violence. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Taylor Michael Wilson may also behind two alleged hate crimes in the St. Louis area. The car's license plate was traced to Wilson, who tried to turn himself in to police but would not say what he had done. He also vandalized St. Louis restaurants with "Whites Only" signs last September.
