Kupwara (Jammu and Kashmir), Jan 06 (ANI): At least nine people went missing after an avalanche hit the Kupwara-Tangdhar road in Jammu and Kashmir, on Friday afternoon.

However, rescue teams of police and Army joined by locals have rescued a child and an elderly person and shifted them to hospital.

A police official said that three BRO personnel were also in the area when the avalanche struck. A search and rescue operation has been launched, but fog and darkness are hampering the process. The survivor was identified as Ghulam Nabi Bhat, son of Ali Mohammed Bhat, a resident of Kalmona, Kralpora, Kupwara. "Without the local volunteers, it was quite impossible to recover the bodies in the record time keeping in view the tough terrain and bad weather", he said.

In a first avalanche, two beacon officials came under a snow avalanche adjacent to Sadhna top.


The spokesman said the chief minister directed the Kupwara district administration to ensure all possible medical assistance to the injured.

In another avalanche hit, seven persons on board a Sumo vehicle bearing registration number JK09A- 3249, were buried under snow when the vehicle they were travelling in came under an avalanche at Khoni Nallah near Sadhna Top.

Minister for Disaster Management, Relief Rehabilitation & Reconstruction and Floriculture, Javaid Mustafa Mir has announced compensation under SDRF of Rs 4 lakh each to the next kin of the family of persons who were killed in the snow avalanche. Conveying sympathies with the bereaved families, the Minister prayed for peace to the departed souls.
