Eastern US Braces For Extreme Cold, Snow As Winter Storm Approaches

Video: Snow in Florida? Exploding Weather Myths: 'Bomb Cyclone' Explained

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, it "occurs when a midlatitude cyclone rapidly intensifies", or quickly drops in atmospheric pressure, marking the strengthening of the storm.

National Weather Service meteorologist Ryan Maue drew some attention when he posted a message to Twitter yesterday about the "a truly incredible extratopical "bomb" cyclone" that's predicted to blow up off the New England coast today.

Once the storm arrives in the ocean east of New England on Thursday, its central pressure would have fallen dramatically over the course of 24 hours.

Florida Governor Rick Scott on Tuesday urged residents in the northern part of his Sunshine State to prepare for the cold.

The ominous name "bomb cyclone" comes from a process called explosive cyclogenesis, or bombogenesis, in which a weather system undergoes a rapid drop in pressure.

While bomb cyclones are merely a meteorological description of a storm and are not named to describe their impacts, they are often heavy storms that are accompanied by hurricane-force winds, dumps of heavy rain or snowfall and flooding along coasts. Now, parts of Northern Florida are under a winter storm watch for the first time in four years.

As Jason Samenow of The Washington Post's Capital Weather Gang reports, "A monster storm will hammer coastal locations from Georgia to ME with ice and snow".

Tallahassee wasn't the only Florida community to be impacted by the winter storm.

By early Thursday morning, snow will cover Long Island and southern New England and will be heavy at times with winds gusting to 50 miles per hour. "By Thursday, the exploding storm will, in many ways, resemble a winter hurricane, battering easternmost New England with potentially damaging winds in addition to blinding snow". So large is the storm's circulation it's expected to suck cold air from the Arctic that will bring on record cold temperatures in the northeast and Mid-Atlantic. The difference between the two air masses helps to strengthen the storm system.

Parts of Florida reported light snow with temperatures just below freezing.
