A Twitter spokesperson confirmed to The Hill that the tweet does not violate its terms of service because it is not a "specific threat".

Protesters in California are calling on Twitter to shut down the President's account after he lashed out against North Korea's leader, Kim Jong Un. And Dorsey has said in the past that Twitter has bigger considerations in mind when policing the tweets of world leaders.

A Facebook event for the protest accuses Dorsey of "endangering the world" and violating its own rules by not banning Trump after he tweeted that his nuclear button is "much bigger" and "more powerful" than North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's.

"Twitter is here to serve and help advance the global, public conversation".

It said such a move would also not silence a world leader, but it "would certainly hamper necessary discussion around their words and actions".

In a statement "World Leaders on Twitter", the platform said it would not remove world leaders or censor their tweets because of their "outsized impact" on society.

Most users can't back up their casual threats with a nuclear arsenal, so it's safe to say that the Trump Twitter situation poses some uniquely weighty questions.

In its blog post, Twitter reiterated its previous statement that all accounts still must follow the company's rules.

On Tuesday, the US president Tweeted about his "nuclear button," saying his is "a much bigger & more powerful one than his, and my Button works!"

Friday's announcement comes less than a month after Twitter began enforcing new rules aimed at filtering out "hateful" and "abusive" content on the social network, including messages which promote or glorify violence.

There's been a lot of discussion about political figures and world leaders on Twitter, and we want to share our stance.

"No one person's account drives Twitter's growth, or influences these decisions", the company added.

A White House spokeswoman said she did not expect there to be any White House comment on the Twitter statement. This week, a tweet invoking the prospect of nuclear war escalated tensions with North Korea, but was allowed to remain on the service.
