Recall Alert: HP recalls notebook computer batteries

HP recalls computer batteries over fire risk HP recalls many laptops due to fire hazard batteries

Nearly one year ago to the day, a whopping 101,000 lithium-ion cells used in various HP notebook computers were similarly deemed a serious fire and burn hazard, extending on a recall program initiated in June 2016 which sought to replace an additional 41,000 batteries. The danger is a common one with electronic devices nowadays; the batteries have the "potential to overheat, posing a fire and burn hazard to customers".

HP said the affected batteries have either been sold as part of the laptop package or separately as accessories.

Also, since the batteries are not created to be user replaceable, HP also recommended owners of affected laptops not to attempt replacing the batteries on their own.

The batteries can overheat, causing it to melt or char the laptop and items around it. You should take the matter seriously too, as eight fire reports have already been filed, including property damage totaling $4,500, and a minor user injury.

There, users will find a special HP Battery Validation Utility to download with the utility telling customers if their battery is affected.

Yes, just as in January 2017, June 2016, May 2011, May 2010, May 2009, October 2008, April 2006, October 2005, June 2005 and probably a bunch of other occasions, HP has found that one of its suppliers has issued a batch of overheating batteries.

The company also provided instructions on how to check if your laptop has a defective battery.

This is hardly the first time HP has recalled batteries.

This mode will discharge the battery and prevent it from being recharged until the battery is replaced.

The company will send those impacted by the fault a free battery replacement, as well as help organise an appointment to actually get it replaced.

The computer maker is providing battery replacement services by an authorized technician at no cost.

"Customers should cease use of affected batteries immediately".
