NY mayor Bill de Blasio described the incident as "the worst fire tragedy we have seen in this city in a quarter century".

The fire started in the Bronx building at about 5.30 a.m. and spread to multiple floors, express.co.uk reported.

At least 22 people - including nine children - were injured Tuesday in a seven-alarm fire in New York City, officials said. Nigro said authorities would enter the building to determine the cause of the fire once it's deemed safe. Video from the scene showed flames and smoke pouring from the building.

"Children starting fires is not rare", FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro said on Friday, adding that the stairway "acted like a chimney".

As flames worked their way upward from a furniture store to the flats above, families, including children, were forced out into historically low winter temperatures.

Residents from the apartments above fled, including a man who ran outside with no shirt and no shoes. More than 250 firefighters were at the scene.

The blaze came five days after a fire at another Bronx apartment building killed 12 people, including four children. At least 12 people were injured. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio called it the worst fire tragedy the city has seen in a quarter century.
