Supermoon tomorrow, a blue moon on January 31; sea surge expected

2018 is starting off big and bright, as the sky will play host to a "supermoon" Monday night.

But do not worry if you missed it, there will be a second chance to see the supermoon at the end of January.

Besides another full moon on January 31, that moon will also be a Supermoon and a total lunar eclipse.

According to NASA, January's first full moon - nicknamed a wolf moon - will take place on January 1 and it will be a supermoon.

During these events, the moon generally appears to be 14% bigger and 30% brighter than a typical full moon.

Meanwhile, a lunar eclipse, a point at which the moon passes behind the Earth into its umbra (shadow), will begin at 6:51 p.m. on January 31 and will be best observed in Taiwan between 8:51 p.m.to 10:08 p.m., said the observatory. Cue space tourism. In February, Elon Musk-owned SpaceX announced that it would be sending paying tourists to the moon in flights as early as 2018. In Milwaukee the eclipse will start at 5:48 a.m. and totality will begin at 6:51 a.m. and last until the moon sets at 7:06 a.m., said Bonadurer.

A supermoon occurs when the moon is at the closest point to Earth on its monthly orbit, and as much of the moon as possible is visible. This one showed the supermoon rising over Rome. "At that time, the distance of the moon from the Earth will be 3,56,846 km".

'Comparing a supermoon with a typical full moon from memory is very hard'.

On January 15, the moon is estimated to be 406,423 kilometers away. This year on Halloween, for instance, the last-quarter moon will come within less than 4 hours of perigee.

With the moon being as close to Earth as it is, there is a significant impact on the tides.

"The best thing about this, with lunar eclipses it doesn't matter where you are because the moon is so bright and visible", Bonadurer said.
