CPI leader D Raja on Tuesday said that the Left was in favour of the Triple Talaq Bill being referred to the Select Committee and accused the government of "bypassing the committees" on crucial bills.

"NCP has already made it clear that we are entirely against criminalisation".

"I have complete conviction that Congress will support the Bill the same way it did in Lok Sabha, or else the minority women will not spare them", Union Minister Giriraj Singh told ANI on Monday.

The bill could get stalled in the Rajya Sabha where government lacks a majority and it may be referred to a parliamentary committee for its review.

DMK MP Kanimozhi and NCP leader Majeed Memon also said they were against criminalisation and hence the triple talaq bill in its present form is not acceptable.

"The way the triple talaq bill was passed in the Lok Sabha, it will be passed in Rajya Sabha too with constructive debate and discussion".

The bill to criminalise triple talaq was passed by the Lok Sabha last week.

Meanwhile, the BJP has kept their hopes high on the passing of the Bill.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday issued a three line whip for all its Lok Sabha (LS) and Rajya Sabha (RS) members.

Speaking at the mujahid state conference in Malappuram on Saturday, Hassan said that he opposed the triple talaq bill because the bill was not aimed at ensuring justice for muslim women but was a prelude to the imposition of the uniform civil code on the muslim community.

According to sources in the Congress, Leader of Opposition in the Upper House Ghulam Nabi Azad has convened a meeting of the leaders of his party as well as other parties in his Parliament chamber today, before the Bill is scheduled to be taken up in Rajya Sabha.
