To the surprise of Tadic when he questioned his motives behind the elbow, Young played down the incident, saying: "I didn't do anything".

Manchester United's Ashley Young has been charged with violent conduct by the Football Association and faces a three-match ban.

Young was issued with the charge after appearing to elbow Dusan Tadic during Manchester United's 0-0 draw with Southampton on Saturday, in an incident which was not seen by match officials but was later spotted on video.

"Yes, he elbowed me and I asked him, "Why did you do this?". I didn't really understand.

Asked if Young should have have been sent off, Tadic said: "Yes". I can fall down but it was really unusual because I didn't expect that from him'.

Several United players felt as though they should have been awarded a penalty when the ball struck Maya Yoshida's hand in the first half but Pawson waved away all protests.

"I watched on the touchline and it looked for me for very clear but 50 metres distance so I give the referee the benefit of the doubt", he said.

The 32-year-old, who has been one of United's stand out performers this season, will miss game against Everton, Derby and Stoke in the coming weeks.

'I'm disappointed about that because you don't expect that from him, because he's an experienced player and he can not do that I think'.
