Hollywood actresses launch Time's Up, to help fight sexual harassment at workplace

Lisa Bryan | 02 January, 2018, 12:18

The initiative includes a legal defense fund, headed by Tchen, Michelle Obama's former chief of staff, and backed by $13 million in donations, to help protect less privileged women from sexual misconduct and the fallout from reporting it.

"If this group of women can't fight for a model for other women who don't have as much power and privilege", Rhimes told the Times, "then who can?"

And a request that women walking the red carpet at the Golden Globes speak out and raise awareness by wearing black.

Time's Up also calls for more women in positions of power and leadership, as well as equal benefits, opportunities, pay and representation for women, and urges the media to turn the spotlight on abuses in 'less glamorized and valorized trades'.

The women announced the launch with a lengthy letter of solidarity published as a full-page ad in the New York Times and the Spanish-language paper La Opinion on Monday.

The open letter opens with "Dear sisters" and closes 'in solidarity'.

Reese Witherspoon, Meryl Streep and Natalie Portman are among stars backing a campaign in Hollywood against sexual harassment. They include Ashley Judd, Gwyneth Paltrow and Kate Beckinsale, as well as Salma Hayek, whose lengthy account of mistreatment by Weinstein - "my monster", she called him - was widely circulated on social media after appearing last month in The New York Times.

Since October, when dozens of women began coming forward to accuse producer Harvey Weinstein of sexual misconduct, numerous men in prominent industries have been forced to resign over sexual harassment claims, including top editors at NPR.

Time's Up has described the letter as "powerful", and said it will focus on lifting the "voices, power, and strength of women working in low-wage industries where the lack of financial stability makes them vulnerable". "That's not what this moment is about".

A drive to reach gender parity at studios and talent agencies.

"We have been siloed off from each other", Reese Witherspoon said. "We're finally hearing each other, and seeing each other, and now locking arms in solidarity with each other, and in solidarity for every woman who doesn't feel seen, to be finally heard".
