The federal agency and AT&T will build a wireless broadband network specifically for the state's public safety community, to assist first responders in being able to talk with each other when cell towers are overwhelmed.
AT&T will build the FirstNet RAN in "opt-in" states or territories at no cost to each jurisdiction, although local public-safety entities will be responsible for paying subscription costs and end-user device expenses.
AT&T has said it will spend $40 billion on the FirstNet project, which is expected to create 10,000 jobs in the U.S. Governor Sununu said, "By moving to opt-in today, New Hampshire will retain AT&T's commitment to build 48 new tower sites across the state". FirstNet could also get a 5G upgrade in the future.
The December 28 deadline, Sununu said, was too tight for other states causing New Hampshire to be the lone state who opted out. "It will provide our first responders with the tools they need to keep Mississippians safe". American Samoa, Guam and Northern Marianas have until March 12 to decide to opt in. "With more than 50 states and territories participating in FirstNet, public safety is assured of an enduring, self-sufficient network to serve them for years to come".
That system, which is operated through a partnership with AT&T, is meant to deliver dependable wireless broadband internet connections to public safety community members.
"Together, we conducted the nation's most thorough state level review of available FirstNet options, negotiated hard on behalf of the state and its first responders, and ultimately obtained one of the best opt-in plan proposals of any state in the country", Stevens said in a statement.
