Roughly 40 percent of the United States population opts for the vaccine every year, and the CDC estimates it prevents about 5 million flu cases annually across the country.

The county reminds its residents there is no live virus in flu shots and the vaccine can not cause the flu.

Children, the elderly and those with compromised immune systems are seen most at risk for the disease, which can be fatal.

The CDC - which lists sore or swollen arms, hoarseness, sore eyes, cough, fever and aches among the most common side effects - notes that these effects "are usually mild and go away on their own".

"We're planning on this being a fairly robust flu season", he said.

"And so they kind of doubled and kept escalating until February 25, 2016", she said. "We all wished it would work better, but it's a pretty darn good vaccine and it's the best vaccine we have right now", Dr. Schaffner stressed.

Faisal Khan, MD, director of the St. Louis County Department of Health, said the county had reported 281 cases of the flu this season (254 of Influenza A, 27 of Influenza B) - and the number is going up.

Since October 1, Christian Hospital has seen at least 91 patients with Influenza A and 11 patients with Influenza B. At least a dozen patients were hospitalized.

According to an analysis published in the November 29 edition of the New England Journal of Medicine, the flu vaccine is not as effective against this year's flu strain that is going around, H3N2, as it has been in previous flu seasons. Some 39.8 percent were vaccinated at this time last season.

According to the CDC, influenza A viruses have been the most commonly identified to date this season, with influenza A (H3N2) the most dominate.

Other Central Illinois hospitals have not yet enacted visitor restrictions, but Bloomington-Normal medical providers have told The Pantagraph that they are treating more patients with flu and flu-like symptoms.

"Unfortunately, it's the one strain that the vaccine is really underperforming in, in every regard", he said.

They recommend anyone who catches the flu, to stay away from areas where you can infect others.

The county says flu vaccinations are recommended for anyone six months or older unless otherwise directed by a physician. However, among people who go to a doctor's office, "it's very hard to show there's a reduction in severity". Almost 90 percent of the specimens that tested positive are of this type. "That's a concern", Flannery said.
