Officer Kenneth Copeland Department

The man accused of shooting a San Marcos police officer multiple times while he was serving unrelated warrants has been charged with capital murder, according to an arrest warrant released to KVUE Wednesday.

Chief Stapp said the loss of Officer Copeland is painful for many in the police department. After a standoff with the officers called to the scene, the suspect eventually surrendered and was taken into custody with a gunshot would that was not life-threatening. However, it was unclear if he was injured from a self-inflicted wound or the police gunfire.

A Texas police officer has died after being shot multiple times by a suspect while serving a warrant.

Copeland was one of a group of SMPD officers who went to the Camino Real subdivision in San Marcos to serve an arrest warrant for a violent crime.

The suspect was also taken to a hospital after he was shot during a standoff with police. The officer was reported to be with other officers while serving the warrant. He was rushed to the Central Texas Medical Center immediately and was later pronounced dead around 3:50 p.m. EST, police said.

The officer is the 119th law enforcement official to be killed in the line of duty this year, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page.

"Ken's a hero. Today was his day off.

Cecilia and I extend our heartfelt condolences to the officer's family and to the entire San Marcos Police Department". "They are a part of our family as well and they did a great job".

Officer Kenneth Copeland, 58, was a 19-year veteran of the San Marcos Police Department, said Police Chief Chase Stapp at a news conference and the first time an officer from the force has been killed. "His picture's hanging in different parts of this police department because everybody here loved him". He leaves behind a wife and four children.

Law enforcement and Fire agencies from the area will contribute vehicles, drape banners and flags from overpasses along the route in honor of the fallen officer.
