McMurphy also confirmed a previous report that OR offered to give Taggart a raise, even offering the coach a one-year extension before Fisher left Florida State.

Florida State now has a replacement for coach Jimbo Fisher, hiring Oregon's Willie Taggart on Tuesday afternoon.

A formal announcement from the school is expected later today with an introductory news conference scheduled for Wednesday morning.

Taggart, a Florida native, spent one season in OR, going 7-5. "He said coaching this team is his dream job".

The FSU football program reportedly has its new head coach. After ending WKU's 26-game losing streak and going 2-10 in his first season, he made strides while going 7-5 in both 2011 and 2012.

OR started 4-1 and even briefly popped into the AP rankings, but starting quarterback Justin Herbert broke his collarbone and the Ducks floundered, going 1-4 without him. Florida State is 6-6 this season and will face Southern Mississippi in the December 27 Independence Bowl.

Taggart will take over for Fisher, who spent eight seasons in Tallahassee and won a national title and three ACC crowns but went through a rocky final week on the job.

At USF, Taggart took the Bulls from a 2-10 record his first season in 2013 to a 10-2 mark last season before he departed for Oregon.

Florida State was ranked third in the Top 25 preseason poll but lost quarterback Deondre Francois in the opener against Alabama and was beset by other injuries.

Taggart, 41, replaced Mark Helfrich at OR last season and guided the Ducks to a 7-5 record and an upcoming trip to the Las Vegas Bowl to face 25th-ranked Boise State.

McMurphy also cited sources saying returning to his home state of Florida was a factor in Taggart's decision.
