President Donald Trump is reportedly working behind the scenes to convince Utah Republican Sen. But according to Politico, the president has launched a one-man campaign to urge Hatch to run for re-election, which has been widely read as a slight to his former political foe, Mitt Romney.

The Atlantic reported in April that Romney, formerly governor of MA and the 2012 Republican presidential nominee, was considering the possibility of running for Hatch's seat. He called Trump's endorsement "certainly is a nice thing", but did not say whether it would influence his decision.

Privately, he said he would prioritize stopping Romney, even if it meant backing Hatch, who entered the Senate in 1977. Just a few weeks ago, one source told the Atlantic that the plan for Hatch to retire and Romney to run was "reported to me as a 'done deal, '" and back in March Hatch called Romney the "perfect" candidate to fill his seat should he opt to step down.

Romney has been considering a Senate run for months, but he may only seek for the GOP nomination if Hatch declines to run for another term. At the time, Hatch told Trump that he hadn't yet made up his mind.

The report also stated two senior administration officials who said Trump's favor for Hatch is not only for blocking Romney, but also because Hatch defended the president during a turbulent time when an "Access Hollywood" video tape leaked, which showed the POTUS bragging about sexually assaulting women.

Romney softened his opposition before the election, however, and was briefly considered to serve as Trump's secretary of state.

Trump's push to stop Romney's prospective Senate bid puts him in line with former White House strategist, Steve Bannon, according to a person familiar with discussions between the president and the Breitbart News head. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) prior to speaking at the Utah State Capitol in Salt Lake City, Utah, U.S., December 4, 2017.

Hatch will accompany Trump on his trip to Salt Lake, to his meetings and the signing of an executive order that will reduce the size of the Bears Ears and Escalante national monuments.

In September, UtahPolicy.com similarly reported that Romney is planning to run for Senate pending Hatch's retirement. Trump previously said he is doing it for Hatch.
